How does it work?
On any PC, notebook or Thin Client anybody, even people with little technology know-how can access a wide range of open source programs using a USB stick which has a personal authentication code incorporated. These programs are already installed on remote servers which are constantly updated and maintained by the ColombOs team and give you a high level of efficiency. Basically, if you have broadband internet (ADSL, Wi-Fi or 3G), a monitor, a keyboard and a Thin Client, you can have easy access to the world of computing.
The “anti-digital divide” technology
Apart from giving everybody access to computer usage, the “client-server” approach promoted and developed by ColombOs actually reduces the so-called “digital divide”, i.e. the technology gap which divides the industrialized world from the developing world. A Thin Client is actually a sufficient means to access the Internet, and quite contrary to a traditional PC it consumes very little energy, costs a lot less and does never have to be substituted because it’s too old. It can also be used in parts of the world where the environmental conditions are difficult or hostile because of humidity, dust or extreme temperatures.
Green computing
Less energy consumption means less CO2 output and less air pollution. Computer usage is one of the major causes of electric consumption and therefore poisons our planet. The centralization of the work of millions of computers on bigger servers allows a huge reduction of energy waste through rationalizing and optimizing resources.
